Buying a new or used car is a big investment so it’s important to do your research to find the best deal. Since you'll likely have the car for several years, you want to make sure you are happy with your purchase. Avoid buyer remorse by checking the little details that are often overlooked by consumers.
Research the Service Area
You spent time in the showroom picking out your car but the service area is where you'll really be spending time in the future. You'll want to check the hours and the process for getting a loaner to make things hassle free in case you ever have a problem. Be sure to take stock in the waiting area amenities to see how comfortable you will be when waiting for service. Check Google or Yelp for reviews of the service area to make sure they get the job done.
Make Sure of the Size
While taking a car on a test drive, you may know to drive it home to make sure it can fit in your garage but you might want to take it a step further. Make sure the trunk can open when the garage door is closed and check to see if you can easily reach around the car for things like brushing off snow, washing or waxing. You should also check the trunk to make sure it will fit things such as sports equipment or a snow shovel.
Try to Test Drive Under Trying Conditions
It may be fun to do a test drive on a sunny day but make sure the car drives well at other times too. Try to drive the car at night and during bad weather such as a rain shower or a snow storm to see if you like how the car handles and if you have enough visibility. If your commute involves a lot of stop and go traffic you may want to drive the car during rush hour.
Check the Technology
Make sure to not only check mundane things like the door looks and seat adjustments. Check the Bluetooth connection and the radio. Make sure any favorite local stations come through loud and clear on the car. Some radio stations are able to get on the air using TV frequencies that are lower on the dial. These stations may be harder to get on newer cars depending on the model of the radio. Some cars can't charge phones while the engine is off so this might be another important thing to check.
“Live” in the Car
You spend a lot of time in your car so make sure you're going to be comfortable. Can you “lounge” in the car comfortably? Do you have enough room to stretch your legs as you drive? Is the placement of things such as cup holders and storage logical for your needs?
By taking some extra time to research the car beyond just the price, you'll really get to know what you are buying and will have a more satisfying owner experience.
