Mad Tea Party

The Mad Tea Party was an Opening Day attraction at the Magic Kingdom and is of course still in the park.  What has changed is that the ride was originally built with no roof to cover it.  The original Disneyland attraction was and still is uncovered.  The ride in California was unable to operate in the rain due to the fact that water soaks the turntables and causes the cups not to spin.

Florida gets considerable rain and the summer heat can make waiting in line unbearable so it is surprising that the ride was not covered from the start.  Perhaps it was felt that such a kinetic ride needed to be seen by visitors and would photograph better for early publicity materials.  The ride was finally covered up around 1974.  The Dormouse and the tea pot in the middle of the ride were also added during this time.  When tickets were in use, this ride required a B coupon.

Materials that featured an uncovered Mad Tea Party included a 1974 GAF park guide (top), early park souvenir books (second and third from bottom) and postcard (bottom).  Apparently Goofy was the only character brave enough to ride the tea cups.
